Local IT support

A Canterbury IT partner half an hour away, not half a country away

Canterbury isn’t a typical business town. A compact medieval centre sits inside the old city walls, full of listed buildings, independent shops, cafés, solicitors and accountants. Around it are two universities, a hospital, the retail and trade parks at Wincheap and along Sturry Road, and the villages and coastal towns that make up the wider district.

That mix creates IT problems national providers rarely plan for. Wi-Fi has to get through centuries-old walls. Hospitality businesses onboard seasonal staff every spring. Professional firms need Cyber Essentials to satisfy clients and insurers. Rural sites off the A2 and A28 still struggle for a decent connection.

SquareOne IT supports Canterbury businesses with the same proactive, security-first service we deliver across Kent: a helpdesk your team can call, 24/7 monitoring, managed security and Microsoft 365 management. Most issues are fixed remotely within the same conversation. When something needs hands on site, an engineer comes out from our office at the Kent Innovation Centre in Broadstairs.

Canterbury’s business mix

IT support shaped around how Canterbury works

Different businesses in Canterbury face very different technology challenges. Here is how we approach the ones we see most often.

Hospitality, tourism & heritage

Visitors to the Cathedral and the city centre keep Canterbury’s hotels, restaurants and attractions busy, and their systems busier.

  • Fast, secure set-up and removal of seasonal staff accounts
  • Guest Wi-Fi kept separate from tills and booking systems
  • Card payment networks set up with PCI DSS in mind
  • Backup connectivity so bookings don’t stop when the line does

Professional services

Solicitors, accountants, surveyors and estate agents hold exactly the data criminals want, and send the invoices they try to intercept.

  • Cyber Essentials for client and insurer requirements
  • Protection against email impersonation and invoice fraud
  • MFA and conditional access across Microsoft 365
  • Secure remote access for partners working from home

Education, research & suppliers

With the University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University in the city, many local firms supply, partner with or spin out of higher education.

  • Security assurances for supplier questionnaires
  • Cyber Essentials, often required for public-sector contracts
  • Secure collaboration with external partners in Teams and SharePoint
  • Managed devices for staff who work across sites

Retail & independents

From the high street to the trade counters at Wincheap, shops depend on tills, stock systems and card terminals that simply can’t go down.

  • Reliable connectivity with automatic 4G/5G failover
  • EPOS and card terminals on a properly segmented network
  • Cloud phone systems that ring across the shop floor and mobiles
  • CCTV you can check from your phone

Health, care & charities

Practices, care providers and charities handle sensitive personal data, often with small teams and tight budgets.

  • Support with the NHS Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT)
  • Encrypted devices and managed backups
  • Sensible, affordable Microsoft 365 licensing
  • Staff training that fits around shifts

Trades & industrial units

Businesses on Canterbury’s industrial estates and business parks often run a busy yard or workshop with staff out on the road.

  • Phones and tablets managed and protected with MDM
  • Wi-Fi across warehouses, yards and workshops
  • Job-management and accounts software kept running
  • Structured cabling for new and refitted units

Historic buildings, modern networks

Fast, reliable Wi-Fi, even behind medieval walls

Thick stone and flint walls, timber frames and awkward extensions are part of Canterbury’s charm, and they’re a nightmare for Wi-Fi. A single router in the corner of a listed building rarely reaches the back office, never mind the upstairs rooms.

We survey the building first, then design a managed wireless network with access points placed where they’ll actually work, joined up so people can move between rooms without dropping calls. Where cabling is needed, we plan discreet routes with your landlord, and with listed building consent in mind where it applies.

How we support you

Remote in minutes, on site when it matters

  • Remote helpdesk

Most issues, from password resets and email problems to software glitches and printer queues, are fixed over a secure remote session, often while you’re still on the phone.

  • Monitoring in the background

Around the clock, every managed device in your Canterbury office reports in to us. Failing disks, missed updates and suspicious sign-ins are picked up before they become downtime.

Connectivity & phones

Getting Canterbury connected, and ready for the copper switch-off

The UK’s old copper phone network (PSTN and ISDN) is being switched off, with the national migration due to finish by January 2027. Any business still relying on traditional phone lines, broadband that depends on them, or analogue alarm and card-machine lines needs a plan now, not in the final month.

Connectivity across the district is uneven. Some streets in the centre have full fibre, while neighbouring buildings are still on copper. The villages around Canterbury can be a lottery. We check what’s actually available at your address and recommend the right option, rather than the easiest one to sell.

FAQ

IT support in Canterbury: your questions

Can’t see your question? Call 01843 482 279 or email hello@squareoneit.co.uk. You’ll get a straight answer from an engineer.

Do you have an office in Canterbury?

Our office is at the Kent Innovation Centre in Broadstairs, around half an hour from Canterbury by road. Most support is delivered remotely and immediately, and our engineers travel to Canterbury businesses for installations, hardware faults and planned site work.

Do you cover Whitstable, Herne Bay and the villages around Canterbury?

Yes. We support businesses across the whole Canterbury district, including Whitstable, Herne Bay, Sturry, Hersden, Chartham, Bridge, Blean and Littlebourne, as well as the city itself.

Can you install Wi-Fi and cabling in a listed building?

Yes. We start with a survey, design a wireless network that works with the building rather than against it, and plan any cabling to be as discreet as possible. For listed buildings, we’ll work with you and your landlord so any changes respect listed building consent requirements.

Can you help my Canterbury business get Cyber Essentials?

Yes. We’re Cyber Essentials certified ourselves, and we help local businesses prepare for and pass the assessment. That means checking devices, firewalls, updates and user access, fixing the gaps, and guiding you through the questionnaire.

What happens to our phone lines when the copper network is switched off?

Traditional PSTN and ISDN lines are being retired across the UK, with the migration due to complete by January 2027. We’ll check what currently depends on your lines, including phones, broadband, alarms and card machines, and move you to VoIP and a suitable broadband service such as SoGEA or full fibre, before the switch-off forces the issue.

How much does IT support cost for a Canterbury business?

The same as anywhere else we cover. Managed IT support starts at £23 per device per month (plus VAT) on our Essentials plan, with Business at £28 and Complete at £35. There’s no extra charge for being in Canterbury, and no call-out fees on managed plans.
