SoGEA broadband

Broadband without the phone line you no longer need

SoGEA (single order generic ethernet access) is fibre broadband delivered without a traditional phone line attached. With the copper phone network being switched off by 2027, it’s the straightforward replacement for older broadband wherever full fibre isn’t available yet, and you stop paying line rental for a phone you don’t use.

Why now

The phone line under your broadband is being retired

Traditional broadband (ADSL and FTTC) rides on a copper phone line. As the UK’s PSTN and ISDN services are withdrawn, with national migration due to complete by January 2027, those lines are being replaced. SoGEA keeps the same fibre-to-the-cabinet broadband technology but removes the dependency on the old voice service.

Benefits

What SoGEA gives you

  • No line rental

Stop paying for a voice line you don’t use, and put your calls on VoIP instead.

  • Future-proof

Unaffected by the copper voice switch-off, with no forced change later.

  • Simpler faults

One service on the line, so problems are quicker to diagnose and fix.

Before you switch

Check what’s still using your phone line

The trickiest part of any switch is the equipment nobody remembers: an alarm panel dialling out, a lift emergency phone, a franking machine, an old card terminal or a fax. We list everything connected to your lines first and arrange a digital alternative for each, so nothing stops working on the day.

  • Phone numbers ported to a VoIP system, so customers can still reach you
  • Alarm and lift lines moved with your alarm or lift provider
  • Card machines switched to broadband or 4G

FAQ

SoGEA questions

Can’t see your question? Call 01843 482 279 or email hello@squareoneit.co.uk. You’ll get a straight answer from an engineer.

Is SoGEA faster than my current broadband?

It uses the same technology as FTTC “fibre broadband”, so speeds are similar, typically up to around 80 Mbps depending on distance from the cabinet. If you need more, full fibre is the upgrade, where available.

Will I lose my phone number?

No. We port your number to a VoIP phone system before the line is ceased, so calls continue as normal.

Do I have to switch before 2027?

Providers are migrating lines area by area, and you may be moved on their timetable. Switching on your own schedule means you control the timing and can make sure everything connected to the line is handled first.

Should I choose SoGEA or full fibre?

If full fibre is available at your address, it’s usually the better long-term choice. SoGEA is the sensible option where it isn’t yet.

Get switch-off ready

We’ll check what’s on your lines, what’s available at your address and plan a clean move to SoGEA or full fibre with VoIP.
