Cloud & network security
Your data lives in two places. Secure both.
Your files and email live in the cloud, and your people connect from the office, home and everywhere in between. We harden Microsoft 365 and your cloud apps, lock down the office network, and give remote staff secure access, so the gaps between them aren’t where attackers get in.

Cloud security
Microsoft 365, hardened beyond the defaults
Microsoft 365 ships with settings designed to be easy, not secure. Out of the box, anyone can often share files with anyone, old sign-in protocols bypass MFA, and a phished admin account can do almost anything.
We apply a security baseline and keep it maintained as Microsoft adds features.
- Conditional access: who can sign in, from where and on which devices
- Separate, protected admin accounts with least-privilege roles
- Sensible sharing, retention and data-loss settings
- Alerts on risky sign-ins, new inbox forwarding rules and mass downloads
- Regular reviews of Microsoft Secure Score and new risks
Network security
A firewall that’s configured, not just installed
Firewalls are only as good as their rules. We replace consumer routers with business-grade firewalls, remove forgotten port-forwards, keep firmware patched and separate staff, guests, cameras and payment devices into their own segments.
Remote working
Secure access for people who work anywhere
-
VPN & zero-trust access
Staff reach office systems through encrypted, MFA-protected connections, or directly to the specific apps they need.
-
Managed devices only
Company data is only available on devices we manage and keep patched, not on the family PC.
-
Safe on public Wi-Fi
Laptops protected on hotel and café networks with endpoint firewall and encrypted traffic.
FAQ
Cloud and network security questions
Can’t see your question? Call 01843 482 279 or email hello@squareoneit.co.uk. You’ll get a straight answer from an engineer.
Is the cloud less secure than an office server?
Not when it’s set up properly. Microsoft’s data centres are far better protected than a server in a cupboard. The risk is in configuration: who can sign in, from where, and what they can share. That’s what we secure.
What is conditional access?
A set of rules in Microsoft 365 that decide whether a sign-in is allowed, based on who, where, what device and how risky it looks. For example, it can require MFA outside the office or block sign-ins from unmanaged devices.
Do we need a VPN?
If staff need to reach systems in the office, such as a file server or line-of-business app, then yes, or a zero-trust alternative. If everything is already in Microsoft 365, conditional access and managed devices often do the job without one.
Which Microsoft 365 licence do we need for this?
Conditional access and Intune device management come with Microsoft 365 Business Premium, which is what we usually recommend for security-conscious small businesses.
How secure is your set-up, really?
We’ll review your Microsoft 365 settings, firewall and remote access, then give you a ranked list of fixes.
